Umschlag und Einband leicht berieben. Ecken bestossen, sonst gutes Exemplar. - This monumental masterwork by the renowned nineteenth century scientist and authority on color, M. E. Chevreul, is unquestionably one of the greatest books ever written on color; though unique, it ranks with Newton`s Opticks and Goethe`s Farbenlehre in its prodigious influence in the field of art. Long out of print, the first English translation is reprinted here. Chevreul`s book dominated the schools of Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism, and exerted profound influence on later schools of painting including today`s Op Art. Chevreul set forth principles that have become basic in color training throughout the Western world. The concept of the harmony of monochromatic colors, of adjacents, of opposites or complements, and of a dominant hue derives directly from Chevreul and is taught today in virtually every educational system in Europe, England, and America. In his illuminating commentary Mr. Birren shows how many of Chevreul`s ideas on color harmony, contrast effects, optical mixtures, and legibility have been validated by modern scientific research in visual perception. Mr. Birren explains Chevreul`s law of simultaneous contrast in terms of present-day concepts and relates Chevreul`s theory of primaries to later theories. In his introduction Mr. Birren gives a lively account of Chevreuil life and works and describes his impact on the French Impressionists. Mr. Birren also provides a helpful glossary of Chevreul`s terminology. Lavishly illustrated, the volume contains 28 color plates, including 15 plates adapted from the original French edition, photographs of Gobelins tapestries, and eight full-page reproductions of outstanding Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist paintings. The numerous black-and-white illustrations include adaptations of Chevreul`s black-and-white plates, and reproductions of many rare photographs depicting Chevreul`s career, for example, a series of photographs of Chevreul taken in 1886 on his one hundred and first birthday in the studio of the famous photographer Nadar-one of the first picture interviews.
